Watertown was historically known as one of the earliest settlements in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and a significant industrial center, especially for the Watertown Arsenal (a primary US military manufacturing site). It was incorporated as a town in 1630. Today, Watertown is known as a dense, diverse community bordering Boston, and a growing center for biotechnology companies. Landmarks include the Watertown Arsenal (now Arsenal Yards) and the Perkins School for the Blind. Major highways through the town include Routes 20 and 16.
