Waltham was historically known as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution in textiles, due to the Boston Manufacturing Company which pioneered the integrated factory system. It was also a major center for watchmaking. Waltham was incorporated as a town in 1738. Today, Waltham is a vibrant commercial and residential city, known as a hub for high-tech research and development (the "Watch City"). Landmarks include the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, the Gore Place estate, and the campus of Brandeis University. Major highways include I-95/Route 128 and Route 20.
