Somerville was historically known for its extensive network of railroads, its slaughterhouses (Packer's Corner), and its important role in the Revolutionary War (it was the site of the first US flag raising). It was incorporated as a city in 1842, separating from Charlestown. Today, Somerville is known as a dense, youthful, and highly creative city, famous for its lively squares (Davis Square, Assembly Square) and its large population of artists and young professionals. Landmarks include Tufts University (partially in Somerville), Prospect Hill Tower, and Assembly Row. Major highways that pass through or near the city include I-93 (the Northern Expressway) and Route 28.
