Milton was historically known for its quarries (especially for granite), its role in the China Trade, and the presence of large estates of wealthy Boston merchants. It was incorporated as a town in 1662. Today, Milton is known as an affluent residential suburb with excellent schools, bordering the vast Blue Hills Reservation. Landmarks include the Milton Academy and the Forbes House Museum. The main highway running through the town is Route 138, while I-93/US Route 1 (the Southeast Expressway) runs along its eastern edge.
