Belmont was historically known as a quiet, agricultural area, primarily recognized for its large estates and market gardens supplying produce to nearby Boston. It was incorporated as a town in 1859, separating from parts of Watertown, Waltham, and West Cambridge (now Arlington). Today, Belmont is known as a desirable, affluent residential suburb with excellent public schools. Landmarks include the Belmont Public Library and the Payson Park Reservoir. Highways that run through the town include Route 2 (the Concord Turnpike) and Route 60.
