Malden was historically known as a manufacturing center, especially for rubber products, boots, and shoes. It was incorporated as a town in 1649, having originally been part of Charlestown. Today, Malden is known as a densely populated, diverse residential and commercial suburb with a lively downtown area and direct MBTA access to Boston. Landmarks include the Malden Public Library and the Bell Rock Memorial Park. The main highway that runs through the city is Route 60.
