Brookline was historically known as a wealthy and exclusive residential suburb, having largely resisted annexation by Boston, which it borders on many sides. It was incorporated as a town in 1705, having previously been a part of Boston known as the Hamlet of Muddy River. Today, Brookline is known for its diverse, urban-feeling environment, its proximity to Boston, and its vibrant Coolidge Corner and Washington Square areas. Landmarks include the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site and the John F. Kennedy National Historic Site (his birthplace). The primary highway running through Brookline is Route 9 (Boylston Street).
